About the Institute

MIGAL – The Galilee Research Institute is one of Israel’s leading applied research centers, operating from Kiryat Shmona.
As of April 2025, MIGAL became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tel-Hai Academic College, serving as the applied research arm of the new University of the Galilee, set to be established in 2026.

The institute operates under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, employing over 300 multidisciplinary researchers, including more than 90 Ph.D. holders, in fields such as life sciences, agriculture, environment, biotechnology, and sustainable systems.

Core Activities

MIGAL focuses on high-impact applied research across four main areas:

1. Biotechnology and Computational Biology
Including advanced therapeutics, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics.

2. Food, Nutrition, and Health
With emphasis on clinical nutrition, functional foods, and microbiome research.

3. Smart Agriculture and Plant Sciences
Focusing on precision agriculture, crop resilience, and soil health.

4. Environmental Sustainability and Energy
Research in circular economy, water systems, and energy production from waste.

MIGAL operates a unique network of Living Labs — an innovative research model conducted in close collaboration with farmers, local authorities, industry, and the community to test and implement real-world solutions.

The institute also promotes technology commercialization, startup creation (over 15 in the past five years), patent licensing, and collaborations with leading industries in agritech, food, biotechnology, and energy.
